1. Who we are
Between the Wines Book Club is an independent book club, blog and podcast operated from La Romana, Dominican Republic. References to "we," "us" and "our" mean Between the Wines Book Club and its operators. References to "you" mean any visitor, reader, subscriber, commenter, book club participant or customer.
2. Eligibility and mature content
This site is intended for adults. Our content focuses on thrillers, psychological fiction and adult literature, and regularly discusses violence, crime, death, sexual content and other mature themes.
- You must be at least 16 years old to submit comments, subscribe to our newsletter or create an account.
- You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to make a purchase from our shop.
- If you are under the applicable age, please do not use those features.
We do not classify or rate our content, and we do not guarantee that every post carries a content warning. Reader discretion applies.
3. Our intellectual property
All original content on this site — including our reviews, analyses, reading guides, discussion questions, drink and food pairings, "Book Trail" location features, "What We Would Change" commentary, podcast episodes, show notes, photographs, illustrations, layouts and the Between the Wines name and logo — is our intellectual property and is protected by copyright and trademark law.
What you may do without asking:
- Read, print and share our pages for your own personal, non-commercial use
- Quote brief excerpts with clear attribution and a working link back to the original post
- Link to any of our pages from your own site or social media
- Use our discussion questions in your own private, non-commercial book club meeting
What requires our prior written permission:
- Reproducing a post, guide or question set in whole or in substantial part
- Republishing our content on another website, newsletter or platform
- Using our content, guides or podcast audio for any commercial purpose
- Using our content to train, fine-tune or evaluate any machine learning or artificial intelligence system, or scraping the site in bulk for that purpose
- Translating our content into another language for publication
- Using the Between the Wines name, logo or branding in a way that suggests affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement
4. Book covers, quotations and third-party material
Our posts include book cover images, book titles, author names and short quotations from the works we discuss. These remain the property of their respective copyright and trademark holders. We reproduce them for the purpose of commentary, criticism and review, which we understand to be a fair and customary use in book reviewing.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any author, publisher, imprint or literary agency unless a post says so explicitly. Where a post is sponsored or the book was provided to us at no cost, we disclose that at the top of the post.
5. Copyright and trademark complaints
We respect intellectual property rights and we act on complaints quickly. If you are a rights holder, or authorised to act for one, and you believe material on this site infringes your rights, email us at contact@btwthewinesbookclub.com with the subject line "Copyright Complaint" and include:
- Identification of the work you say has been infringed
- The specific URL or URLs on our site where the material appears
- Your name, address and a contact email address
- A statement that you have a good faith belief the use is not authorised
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate, and that you are the rights holder or authorised to act on their behalf
We will review the complaint and, where appropriate, remove or amend the material. Please contact us before escalating to our hosting provider or to a search engine — in most cases we can resolve the matter within a few days.
6. Your comments and submissions
We love a good argument about a book. We moderate anyway.
By posting a comment, review, message or other material on the site, you confirm that:
- The content is yours, or you have the right to post it
- It does not infringe anyone else's rights
- It is not spam, promotional, defamatory, harassing, hateful, obscene or unlawful
You retain ownership of what you post. You also grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to display, store, reproduce and quote your comment in connection with the site, our newsletter, our social media and our podcast — for example, reading a listener comment on air. We will not sell your comment or present it as our own work.
We may edit, refuse, delete or unpublish any comment at our discretion, with or without notice. Comments express the views of the person who wrote them, not ours.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the site for any unlawful purpose or in breach of these Terms
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the site, its servers or its accounts
- Introduce viruses, malware or any other harmful code
- Scrape, crawl, harvest or bulk-download the site, or use automated tools to do so, except for search engine crawlers operating in good faith
- Interfere with the site's normal operation or place unreasonable load on it
- Impersonate any person, or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity
- Collect other users' personal information from the site
- Resell, redistribute or commercially exploit any part of the site or our products
8. Book club participation and events
We announce monthly reading picks, discussion sessions, virtual author meetups and other activities. Participation is voluntary and, unless we state otherwise, free.
- Scheduled events, dates, guests and reading picks may change or be cancelled. Author appearances in particular depend on third parties and are never guaranteed.
- By joining a virtual session you may be visible or audible to other participants. Sessions may be recorded and published as podcast episodes or clips. If you do not wish to be recorded, please tell us before the session begins or attend with your camera and microphone off.
- We may remove any participant whose conduct is disruptive, abusive or harassing.
- You are responsible for obtaining your own copy of each book. Reading picks are recommendations, not endorsements of any retailer.
9. Newsletter and email
If you subscribe, you agree to receive periodic emails from us about new posts, monthly picks, podcast episodes, products and occasional offers. You may unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email, and we will never share your address with third parties. We may discontinue the newsletter at any time. How we handle your email address is described in our Privacy Policy.
10. Shop: orders, prices and payment
These provisions apply to any purchase you make from our shop.
- Prices. All prices are shown in the currency displayed at checkout and may change without notice. Taxes and shipping, where applicable, are calculated at checkout.
- Errors. We take care with our listings, but if a product is listed at an incorrect price or with an incorrect description, we may cancel the order and refund you in full. We will contact you before doing so.
- Order acceptance. Your order is an offer to buy. A contract forms only when we confirm the order or dispatch the product. We may decline any order, including where we suspect fraud or where a product is unavailable.
- Payment. Payment is taken at the time of order through our third-party payment processor. We do not store your card details. You confirm that you are authorised to use the payment method you provide.
- Delivery. Physical goods, where offered, are dispatched to the address you provide. Delivery estimates are not guarantees. Risk passes to you on delivery. You are responsible for any import duties or customs charges in your country.
- Digital delivery. Digital products are delivered by download link or email immediately after payment clears. If you do not receive your file, contact us and we will resend it.
11. Digital products and your licence
When you buy a digital product from us — a printable, a template, a reading guide, a lock screen pack or similar — you are buying a licence to use it, not ownership of it.
Your licence permits you to:
- Download the file and use it for your own personal, non-commercial purposes
- Print it as many times as you like for your own use
- Use it within your own private book club or household
Your licence does not permit you to:
- Share, email, upload, resell or redistribute the file, in whole or in part
- Include it in any product, bundle, course or membership you sell
- Claim authorship of it, or remove our branding or copyright notices
- Use it commercially, unless you have purchased a commercial licence from us in writing
The licence is personal to you and non-transferable. Breaching it terminates the licence immediately and does not entitle you to a refund.
12. Refunds, returns and cancellations
Digital products
Because digital products are delivered instantly and cannot be returned, all sales of digital products are final and non-refundable once the download has been made available to you. By completing a digital purchase you acknowledge this and waive any cancellation right that would otherwise apply. If a file is corrupted, incomplete or does not match its description, contact us within 14 days and we will replace it or refund you.
Physical products
Where we sell physical goods, you may request a return within 14 days of delivery provided the item is unused and in its original condition. Return shipping is at your cost unless the item arrived damaged or incorrect. Personalised or made-to-order items cannot be returned unless faulty.
How to request
Email contact@btwthewinesbookclub.com with your order number and the reason. Approved refunds are issued to the original payment method and may take several business days to appear.
13. Affiliate links and advertising
Some links on this site are affiliate links, and we display advertising. We may earn a commission when you click a link and make a purchase, at no additional cost to you. Full details, including our participation in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, are set out in our Privacy Policy & Affiliate Disclosure.
Purchases you make on a third-party retailer's site are governed by that retailer's terms, not ours. We are not a party to those transactions and cannot help with orders, shipping, returns or refunds placed elsewhere. Our editorial opinions are never influenced by affiliate or advertising relationships.
14. Accuracy of content and spoilers
We strive for accuracy but make no warranties regarding the completeness or reliability of our content. Reviews, ratings, drink pairings, food pairings, travel suggestions and location information reflect our personal experience, research and opinion at the time of writing. Publication dates, page counts, prices and availability change.
Spoilers. Our reading guides discuss plot in detail, including endings and twists. We flag dedicated spoiler sections where we can, but we cannot guarantee that every page is spoiler-free. Read at your own risk.
Nothing on this site is professional advice of any kind. Where we mention alcohol, we do so for adults of legal drinking age; please drink responsibly and never drive after drinking.
15. External links
Our site links to third-party websites, including retailers, publishers, Goodreads, Spotify and social platforms, for your convenience. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement.
16. Site availability
We provide the site on an "as available" basis. We may modify, suspend, restrict or discontinue the site, or any feature of it, at any time and without notice. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access, and we are not liable for any interruption, data loss or downtime.
17. Disclaimer of warranties
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site and everything on it are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be secure, uninterrupted, or free of viruses or errors.
18. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- Between the Wines Book Club and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or anticipated savings, arising from your use of the site, your reliance on its content, any purchase you make, or any inability to access the site.
- Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of or relating to the site or these Terms shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) fifty United States dollars (USD 50).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
19. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Between the Wines Book Club and its operators from any claim, demand, loss, liability or expense, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the site, your infringement of any third party's rights, or any content you submit.
20. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the site, your account, your comments or your participation in book club activities at any time, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms or acted unlawfully. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification and governing law — will continue to apply.
21. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms at any time. The revised version takes effect when posted here with an updated revision date, and your continued use of the site constitutes acceptance. Material changes will be highlighted on the site. Terms applicable to a purchase are those in force at the time you placed your order.
22. Governing law and disputes
These Terms and any dispute arising from them or from your use of the site are governed by the laws of the Dominican Republic, without regard to conflict of law principles. You and we agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of La Romana, Dominican Republic.
If you are a consumer resident in the European Union, the United Kingdom or another jurisdiction whose law grants you the right to bring proceedings in your place of residence, nothing here removes that right or deprives you of protections that cannot be waived by agreement.
Before starting formal proceedings, please contact us. Most disputes can be resolved by email, and we would rather talk about it.
23. General provisions
- Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy & Affiliate Disclosure, form the entire agreement between you and us regarding the site.
- Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in full force, and the unenforceable provision will be applied to the maximum extent permitted.
- No waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of our right to do so later.
- Assignment. You may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms. We may assign ours in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of the site.
- No partnership. Nothing in these Terms creates any partnership, agency, employment or joint venture between you and us.
- Force majeure. We are not liable for any failure to perform caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- Headings. Section headings are for convenience only and do not affect interpretation.
